Seven Wine and Cheese Pairings Worth Seeking Out

Great wine and great cheese are each a pleasure on their own, but the right match makes both taste better. Here are seven award-winning pairings, from a crisp Oregon Chardonnay to a rich Spanish dessert wine. Several of the cheeses took first place in their categories, and one earned third best in show.

  • Shepherd's Way Friesago – 🏆 1st in its category, paired with 2023 Martin Woods Temperance Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills - 97 points

A first-place American Cheese Society winner, Friesago is a natural-rind, semi-aged sheep's milk cheese with a dense texture, a pleasantly mild flavor and a slightly nutty finish. It is paired with a 97-point Chardonnay from Oregon's Eola-Amity Hills.

  • Humboldt Fog – 🏆 1st in its category, paired with Henri Champliau Crémant de Bourgogne Brut Authentique - 96 points

A soft-ripened classic from Cypress Grove, paired with sparkling Burgundy. Conceived in a dream (yes, really!) by the founder, this masterpiece paved the way for soft-ripened goat cheese in America.

  • Deer Creek The Luna Moth – 🏆 1st in its category, paired with 2024 DeLille Chaleur Blanc (Sauvignon Blanc / Sémillon) - 96 points

A Wisconsin clothbound cheddar from Deer Creek, bathed in elderflower liqueur and paired with a Washington white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

  • Widmer's Aged Brick – 🏆 1st in its category, paired with 2024 Lady of the Sunshine Bassi Pinot Noir - 98 points

Aged Brick is an American original and one of the first washed-rind cheeses produced in the U.S. It was developed in 1877 by John Jossi, a Swiss-born cheesemaker, and is paired with a Pinot Noir.

An award-winning, traditional English-style clothbound cheddar aged 16 to 18 months, paired with a 95-point Tuscan red from Bolgheri.

This award-winning, traditional Dutch-style gouda evokes flavors of salted caramel and butterscotch, with a remarkably long-lasting umami finish. It is paired with an aged Rioja Reserva.

  • Kingston Blues Breezy Blue – 🥉 3rd in its category, paired with NV Alvear "1927 Solera" Pedro Ximénez, Montilla-Moriles - 98 points

A smooth blend of cow's and goat's milk, handcrafted in Wisconsin for a bright, earthy flavor and a creamy finish. It is paired with the highest-scoring wine on the list, a sweet Pedro Ximénez from Montilla-Moriles.
